Programming Notes
Welcome to April and the start of Spring! The weights just keep moving up, and in turn, you all keep getting stronger and stronger! In our strength classes this month, we are looking at the pyramid for our deadlifts, where we not only have one set of AMRAPs, but a second one too. We'll take the time in class to really make sure we are focusing on our form through these heavy lifts. In our upper body movements, we are going to keep the volume up and continue working to build up those smaller muscle groups associated with the press movements.

In conditioning classes, we will continue to explore different kettlebell flows and how the movements connect together. We are also going to be starting the Fighter Pull Up Program (you can read more here: Strongfirst Fighter Pull-Up Program). While this is not going to appear in our programming every day, you will see it in each conditioning class to get our workout started. By having it three days a week, it will offer the volume needed to get stronger without taxing the shoulders/grip too much. This will continue to be in our programming this month and next in order to help get your arms and shoulders prepped for swimsuit season!

Member Spotlight: Mark Grivel
1. Strength training is almost completely new to you. What is it that got you through the door and keeps you coming back each day?
Strength training is new to me, but honestly, just intentionally working out at all is new to me, too. My lack of regular exercise was starting to become evident, and my lack of strength and endurance had become personally noticeable. I took the plunge with BellHaus because the location couldn’t be more convenient; literally a stone’s throw away from my apartment!

I keep coming back for two reasons. First, even though the cost is higher, the value is clearly there. Quite frankly, I have no desire to spend any time or effort whatsoever thinking about which exercises I need to do, how to do them, whether or not I’m doing them properly, or much about working out at all. I love that at BellHaus, all I need to do is show up, and somebody much more qualified than I does all the thinking for me. Beyond that, the community is supportive and friendly, but not in an overbearing sort of way. Not to mention I get my puppy fix! Totally down for “I ❤ Pekkala” shirts.

2. Given the ferocious nature inherit in Shakira's hit single "She Wolf", is there another song or type of music that really gives you that same feeling?
I had to look up that song… My go to music is classic rock, but specifically for working out, it’s a toss-up between prog-rock, big hair bands from the 80s, and classic heavy metal.

3.
What movement is your favorite when it shows up in the gym?
I’m not sure that I have a favorite movement, but if I had to pick one, it would be the Turkish Get-Up. It’s straightforward enough that I can remember the steps should I want to do it at home or when traveling, but complex enough to work out a variety of different muscle groups, while also improving my balance and poise.

4. Seeing as the strength training is still relatively new for you, what has been the biggest benefit(s) you have noticed?
The training I have been doing over the last few months has already started to pay off. In my role as a food scientist, I frequently carry 50lbs. bags of ingredients, heavy boxes of meat, or assemble/break down large equipment. I have definitely noticed that these tasks have gotten easier, and indeed I don’t get winded nearly as quickly when doing strenuous work. I haven’t weighed myself in years, but people I see infrequently have recently commented positively on my physique.

5.
What else do you get up to when not sweating in the gym?
When I’m not sweating buckets at the gym, I’m playing videogames (PC master race!) or exploring the natural world. I love finding things that amaze me, whether it’s natural wonders, feats of engineering, or technological advances. I would much rather join a watch party for SpaceX rocket launches than for sporting events.

Near Southside, Inc. - Open Streets 2018
Join us Sunday, April 15th from from Noon to 4pm as we take part in Open Streets on Magnolia Ave. BellHaus Fitness will be one of the featured activities during the day, offering a 1:00 Row Challenge.

Men and women, young and old, are welcome to enter our 1:00 Row Challenge! Jump aboard one of our Concept2 row machines and see how far you can get in a minute. Try to beat one of your friends, or better yet, one of the coaches. Be the quickest, and see your name at the top of the leader board. But the real challenge is, will it stay there all day?

What is Open Streets?

Open Streets is a four-hour Sunday event, which closes Magnolia Avenue and other adjacent streets to traffic and opens them up to cyclists, food trucks, dog-walkers, skateboarders, yoga classes, face-painters and much more. The event is an expression of the Near Southside's community spirit in every way: local businesses set up activities along the route; neighborhood residents help spread the word about street closures and detours; and dozens of community partners take ownership of key planning details such as routes and activities, temporary public art projects, pet adoptions, bike safety courses, setting up and breaking down barricades on event day, and much more. Open Streets has grown to be one of the Near Southside's most beloved community events with attendance in the thousands and more than 120 community partners.

Let's Get Lateral
The stepping and movement of both drills provides increased eccentric loading, trains deceleration, and has aspects of movement variability built in since “no two steps are the same.” You will also notice an increased cardiovascular effect. Enjoy the pain…as Pavel would say.

A Better Understanding of Shoulder Health
If you have ever experienced shoulder pain when trying to lift weights, practice yoga, box, swim, surf, or simply brush your hair, you know how much you rely on your shoulders functioning well. A better grasp of the anatomy of the shoulder will help you understand how and when injuries occur.

A Practical Guide to Intermittent Fasting
